The Overlook @ Geer Tree Farm

Cheri and Matt are two of the sweetest people we have met.  It was such and honor to spend their wedding day with them.  Jake and I had never been to the overlook before, and we loved it the moment we arrived.  We instantly understood why Cheri and Matt chose this location for their wedding.  Like them it is laid back, fun, a little quirky, and beautiful.  Geer Farm is a family run business.  The staff is friendly and full of heart.  They have paid attention to all the little details that make a day special.  And the land and the view is spectacular.  Matt and Cheri said they chose the venue because they loved looking out onto the sky.  We loved their choice.

When Elise and Sean planned their wedding, they were hoping for outdoor photos, a great night time reception, and a day that was beginning to feel a little like fall.  They got all three things.  It was the first weekend in September that had a nice cool breeze, beautiful light in the park, and an early enough sunset to have a evening party downtown.  The Society Room was a perfect venue to capture that romantic and elegant vibe.

There are so many wonderful things to say about last Saturday’s wedding especially starting with how amazing  and easy  it was to photograph this couple.  However I will leave it all for the full blog coming soon.  The lead up to the wedding might have had a bit of craziness and bad luck, but the day could not have been more perfect.  It was the true calm and beauty after the storm.  Here are just a few photos from the day, so make sure to check back for more!

Michelle & Kevin–Wedding At Lost Acres Vineyard

JKoteenPhotography_LostAcresVineyard_Wedding_GranbyCT_JakeKoteenPhotographer_4120.jpg

This was a fun wedding for us to photograph.  A couple months ago, we didn’t know Michelle or Kevin, and now it feels like we have known them forever.  We have such interesting connections to each other, so it made it special to be a part of the day.  In fact they only live a couple houses down from us. They are warm and welcoming people.  So it was no surprise that so many people came out on a Thursday night to celebrate their love and union.

Katie and Andrew traveled back east to celebrate their wedding near Katie’s hometown.  They had friends and family from all over the country and world fly in to celebrate the big occasion.  Even their two dogs made the journey to walk down the aisle.   Guests were treated to a beautiful afternoon along the Farmington River as well as a weekend full of festivities.  In the midst of the oppressive Northeast summer heat, Katie and Andrew were blessed with a summer day of reprieve.  The July afternoon was a pleasant temperature for their tented ceremony.  The crazy weather that threatened the day held out until the reception and left as quickly as it arrived.  I would guess that most guests were too busy enjoying their fun on the dance floor to have even noticed!

October 16, 2015

Danielle and Tony had a gorgeous, autumn day for their wedding.  We met Danielle at her aunt’s beach house in Groton Long Point.  The ladies were there getting ready, and we were able to use the beach for some photos.  After we headed over to the country club to meet up with Tony and the guys.  Danielle and Tony kept the day traditional and waited until their ceremony to see each other.  They both looked awesome.  Neither of them could hide their emotions the first moment their eyes locked with each other.  No matter when it is during the day, I always love the moment a bride and groom see each other for the first time.  Danielle and Tony’s moment was a particularly candid and sweet one.

Ted and Sandy enjoy the beach and the coast, however they are typically enjoying the west coast since it is where they live.  Sandy is from CT, so they wanted to pick a venue back east and they wanted a New England shoreline feel.  The ocean was still incorporated yet the day had a truly East Coast feel and flair.  The Inn at Mystic was a perfect location to host a party for bi coastal guests.  The venue is beautiful.  The day was gorgeous so everyone was able experience the beautiful view on top of the hill.  And the day was complete with a classic Northeast menu of clam chowder and lobster.  Sandy and Ted had a beautiful and memorable wedding shared with family and friends.

Barbara and Tom

Engagement Photos

Cranbury Park, Norwalk, CT

Jake and I really want to thank Barbara and Tom for braving the cold and getting us out in the snow for some photos.  Last weekend we took advantage of what seemed like a warm day.  The temp reached the 30s, which almost felt spring like in comparison to recent frigid temperatures.  When we planned the photo shoot weeks ago, we could not have asked for a better day.   It was awesome to get out of the indoors, trudge through the snow, and actually enjoy the winter.  I feel like I have been cooped up inside waiting for a good reason to force me out and into the fresh air.  This was the perfect activity to get us all out and breathing the outside air.  None of us had been to Cranbury Park before, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect for a park in the winter.  There is a beautiful old mansion on the property, which we had assumed we might use for some photos.  We didn’t realize that Cranbury Park actually has a frisbee golf course.  Believe it or not, last Saturday there was a tournament for charity!  They, too, were braving the snow and ice and occupying the mansion.  So instead, we headed out on the extensive trails throughout the park.  The landscape provided us with a beautiful winter wonderland.  Barbara and Tom were fun and easy going subjects who were willing to take on any suggestion we had.  This included walking through deep snow, sitting on the wet cold ground, and yes, even lying in it all for the sake of a fun photo.  Each time we get out for a winter engagement session we remember just how much fun they are to do.  It is always nice to have something fun and different to look forward to during the long, long northeast winter.  Here are a few photos from our session.  I can’t wait to get back to the park in the spring and maybe even try a new frisbee golf course!

Sarah & Matt–Lake Of Isles Wedding

Sarah & Matt
October 18, 2014
Lake Of Isles

Sarah and Matt were married during the height of our foliage season. The October colors were beautiful for this wedding. The attire for everyone looked fantastic as well as Sarah’s details. It was a perfect compliment to all that mother nature added to the day. The afternoon was perfect for a fall wedding.
Lake of Isles is a great venue for people to come and celebrate. It is directly across from Foxwoods Casino and hotels. The hotel on the property is great. We had fun with both the men and ladies before the ceremony. After a few getting ready photos, we all headed over to New London to get these two hitched. St. Mary Star of the Sea is a beautiful and large church. The Reverend always has a great service, and Sarah and Matt’s wedding was no exception.
After the ceremony, we headed to a small little park on the way to the venue. It was a cute little spot along the way for photos. It was a perfect place to take advantage of some of the foliage before heading to the reception on the golf course.
It has been said that rain on your wedding day is good luck. I think this is exactly what we were all saying when we got stuck in the pouring rain. We headed out in golf carts with the newlyweds for some photos. The clouds rolled in and the rain came down hard. However these two were troopers. The rain went as quickly as it came and we were able to stay out on the course for some gorgeous photos. This was a day that had it all. It was full of fun, laughter, tears of joy, surprises, and excitement. The party was a perfect end to a great day. Sarah and Matt, we thank you for including us.

Fall is beautiful, brief, and a gorgeous time of year for a wedding in Connecticut. Laura and Steven chose a perfect date because they had the day that all couples dream of when planning an autumn wedding. The weather was warm, sunny, and full of vibrant color.
Family and guests joined Steven and Laura at Saint Clements Castle for both the ceremony and reception. The grounds were green and colorful amongst the trees with changing leaves. The ceremony overlooked the river and looked amazing. Both inside and out the castle was beautifully decorated with sweet details and beautiful floral arrangements. The flowers and attire were the perfect compliment to the day. Not only did the details look amazing, but so did Laura and Steven. Neither Laura nor Steven realize just how photogenic each of them is. They both looked great and were such a pleasure to photograph. Laura and Steven exuded happiness and a fun-loving spirit throughout the day. It was a perfect wedding day. And we enjoyed out time with their family and friends. Laura and Steven, thank you for including us in your wedding day. Enjoy!

We had never been to the venue before, but we were instantly impressed and in love with the location. The farm is 700 acres with a ton of natural ambiance to offer. Erica and Peter’s guests spent the weekend enjoying the farm. Both the rehearsal dinner and wedding were held on the premises, and Erica and Peter did a great job personalizing the venue for the big event. We loved all the touches to the day and the games that were set out to keep the guests entertained when they weren’t on the dance floor. Their personal and homemade photo booth was a fun addition as well.

Martha & Rikin–Loomis Chaffee Wedding

Martha & Rikin
August 23, 2014
Loomis Chaffe School
Windsor, CT

Martha and Rikin had a sweet and nostalgic wedding with many beautiful touches. These two met at Loomis Chaffe, so there wasn’t even a doubt in their minds that the school would be the perfect location for them to tie the knot. They owe thanks to the teacher that partnered them for a school project and kicking off their destiny. Upon graduation, these two just new that it wasn’t an ending but rather a beginning of a true love story. Their romance continued and survived the long distance of two different colleges in two different cities. Rikin was in NYC and Martha in Boston. After college, they decided to hit the road and travel together. Now they have moved life 3000 miles to the other coast. Through all the distance and movement, the one constant has been their love and devotion for each other.
Jake and I were honored to have witnessed their love first hand. We also felt a bit of a personal connection to their story since Jake and I met in high school at the private school we attended. While our story didn’t take us through high school and graduation, we understand the special bonds you create with your fellow private school grads. Many of Martha and Rikin’s friends from school came from all over the country and world to be a part of the day as well. It was such a pleasure to capture the wedding memories for these two. The school had so many beautiful places for photos, and we knew that it held so many memories that we couldn’t go wrong with any corner, nook, or landscape the school and grounds had to offer. It was a beautiful wedding thanks to all the parties involved. Martha and Rikin’s vendors did a fabulous job brining to life their vision for the day. Martha and Rikin, we thank you for including us in your day.

Bridal Prep, Photos, Reception: Nantasket Beach Resort, Hull, MA
Ceremony: St. Paul Parish, Hingham, MA

Vanessa and Colin are two very special and sweet individuals. They were celebrated by family and friends over a beautiful July weekend. Their wedding was held at Nantasket Beach Resort which is located alongside a long stretch of beach in Hull, MA. These two were blessed with a perfect weather weekend to enjoy a wedding at the beach.
Not only was the resort a great place for guests to spend the weekend, but the area was also a nice place for a mini vacation. Jake and I enjoyed checking out the area as we prepared for the day. We especially love the little town of Hingham where the ceremony was held. The church was old and absolutely beautiful. It was a beautiful place for Vanessa and Colin to exchange vows.
This wedding was a special day as a photographer for me in particular. In my previous line of work, Vanessa was a member of my staff. She was cheerful, sweet, and willing to do anything for anyone. Absolutely nothing has changed about her. You can see her genuine nature in every photo, and she managed to find a man who is every bit the same. Colin is just as warm and welcoming as Vanessa. Jake and I were very excited and honored to have been a part of this wedding for two deserving and kind individuals. We also saw how excited each family was about these two joining in matrimony. They really are a special duo who deserved to be celebrated. Vanessa and Colin we hope you enjoy looking through your photos as much as we enjoyed capturing the moments of your day.

Sarah & Kyle–Publick House Wedding

Sarah & Kyle
June 28, 2014
Getting Ready: Private Residence, Bolton, CT
Formal Photos: Heritage Farm, Bolton, CT
Publick House, Sturbridge, MA
Ceremony: Bolton Congregational Church, Bolton, CT

Sarah and Kyle have an adorable story and long history with each other. Instead of boy meets girl, falls in love with girl, and asks girl to marry him, it is a bit the opposite. In the case of Sarah and Kyle, these two met in the first grade and Sarah just knew. She said then that she wanted to marry Kyle. She wrote him love notes and never hid her young love. Being young, it was a bit overwhelming for Kyle since the first grade isn’t exactly a time in life when it is cool to have a female admirer. However, they grew up together in a small town and were a part of each other’s lives from then on. Fast forward to high school and finally these two started the evolution from friends to one day husband and wife. They took the first step by attending prom together, although they went as “just friends.” However, as Kyle’s brother mentioned in his best-man speech, soon something began to change. It was Kyle who started coming home from college to visit Sarah. It was Kyle who began to talk about her more and more. And finally Kyle figured out what Sarah already discovered in the first grade, they were meant to be husband and wife! I cannot tell you how much we loved being a part of such a great love story and amazing wedding day. Their families surrounded them with love and support. It was a truly special day. Sarah and Kyle, congratulations on finally fulfilling your destiny. We wish you both the best and thank you for including us in your day. Also, thank you for introducing us to an incredible location for photos. Heritage Farm is a special place that I know we will visit and use time and time again.

Here is a little sneak peek of this beautiful wedding just a little over a week ago. It was a perfect day along the CT shoreline. Cristiana and Mark took us to a little park we had never been to before for their photos. Jake and I were immediately excited by all it had to offer. Edgerton Park was a beautiful setting for the photos, and we are excited to show more soon. So, don’t forget to check back for the full blog post. In the meantime, enjoy!

Ceremony & Reception: Anthony’s Oceanview New Haven, CT

Jake and I had a fun time with this couple and their family. Holly and Ray waited a long time to find the right person to exchange vows with. Their families could not have been happier or more excited to toast these two and share in the celebration. Holly and Ray had a nice outdoor ceremony followed by a few photos on the beach. They braved the chilly wind to get a few photos of the bridal party and family before heading inside for the party. Although we weren’t there for the whole evening, we had a great time with everyone while we were. Thanks for including us in your special day. Enjoy!

Paulette and Mark are a stunning couple! They looked amazing on their wedding day. We were so very honored to have been a part of this fun and special celebration. While we love all the weddings we are a part of, this one was a bit more close to our hearts. We have known Mark and Paulette for years. We waited and hoped that a wedding would come one day. Not only were we excited by the engagement, but we were elated to be their photographers. They are the sweetest individuals and nicest couple. They have such big hearts and fun personalities. So many people were there to help share in their love and celebration. We had an awesome time with friends and family. There were so many great moments captured from the day. We hope you enjoy!

Ceremony–St.Mary’s Church, Stamford, CT
Reception–Fantasia Wedding and Banquet Facilities, North Haven, CT

Olivia and Kevin had a beautiful afternoon for a spring wedding. Jake and I headed to meet them at Olivia’s childhood home. We loved everyone right at the start. Her family was warm, welcoming, and fun to work with. We headed over to Binney Park in Greenwich, CT for these two to share their first look. I always love a moment that is a bit more private between the couple. We are blessed with the opportunity to see just how much in love with each other and excited a couple is on this special day. Binney Park was coming alive with spring and was a great location for their photos.
The church was spectacular. It is one of the largest we have been in with some of the more interesting nooks for photos. There is something about a grand structure for a ceremony that really adds to the impact of a wedding. We really enjoyed getting to be a part of the family’s history and tradition. St. Mary’s Church is so important to Olivia and her family that Kevin agreed to get baptized only a week earlier, so they could be married in the church! Now, that is a good man doing great things for love.
After the ceremony, it was on to the reception in North Haven. We had a great time with friends and family at Fantasia. Everyone was ready to party and dance the night away. We were very honored to have been a part of the day and celebration for such a sweet couple. Enjoy!

Sara and Tom woke up to a gorgeous day for a wedding. It rained in the week before, and it rained in the days after. However it could not have been a more perfect day to celebrate this couple. We had an awesome time with these two. Although we weren’t surprised since we had so much fun capturing their engagement photos. Their light-hearted nature made them fun and easy to photograph. They were quite trusting subjects. They never batted an eye when we told them we wanted to go to a parking lot for photos. “Just trust us”, we said. “The parking lot behind the dry cleaners will be worth it in the end!” We certainly think the photos in the reeds look amazing, so hopefully you will share our sentiment. After we headed to the beach for a few more laughs and many more photos. The day was filled with laughter and dancing. It was truly a celebration from beginning to end. We were so honored to have been a part of the day. Enjoy checking out some of the photos!

Jake and I really enjoyed photographing Katie and Kent’s wedding. It was a different kind of day for us. It reminded us a bit of how weddings were when our parents were married. Katie and Kent asked us to come just for the ceremony and to capture some photos of family and friends. Katie arrived at the church and stayed behind closed door until the ceremony began. Kent saw her for the first time down the aisle. After they were officially married, they greeted guests and posed for photos. The church was beautiful and bright and the grounds were impeccable. It was the perfect place for their photos. Katie and Kent, we really enjoyed meeting both of you and learning a little bit about your history together. We hope you like the photos.

Albany Country Club

Kate and Matt are such sweet individuals and a wonderful couple. We got a glimpse of their big hearts and love at their engagement shoot. We were very excited to see them exchange their vows. Jake and I headed to the hills of upstate NY to the Albany Country Club to capture this beautiful wedding. The ceremony was on the patio of the club and overlooking the golf course. The course is nestled in the hills and was picturesque all around. Although the weather looked a bit ominous and a few drops did fall, Kate and Matt were able to keep their ceremony outside, and we were able to capture their photos outside as well.
Kate and her family are from Russia. There were many guests in attendance who did speak English. So Kate’s dad took on the job of translating all the big and important moments of the day. He translated the entire ceremony as well as the speeches. He did a great job of keeping everyone feeling a part of the moments. I find it so amazing how people find love. Kate started as a young girl in Russia and ended up a married woman in America who pledged her love with an amazing, down-to-earth man from Plattsburgh, NY. Although they started oceans apart, fate brought them together at Wentworth Institute of Technology. These two have infectious smiles and warm personalities. They had so many people who surrounded them with love. I can’t think of a more deserving couple to have their love celebrated by friends and family from all over. We were honored to share the laughs, fun, and little moments throughout the day with everyone. Kate and Matt, we thank you for having us be a part of your day. Enjoy!

The Branford House at Avery Point

Cassie and Evan celebrated Labor Day by getting hitched! Jake and I were excited for this wedding since Jake would be joining some familiar faces. He photographed Evan’s brother and sister-in-law’s wedding a couple years ago. So, we knew this would be a warm, welcoming, and fun wedding to document. We met Cassie and her bridesmaids at the hotel before the wedding. We quickly learned this bunch had a great sense of humor and a penchant for fun photos. We had many laughs over their desire to a bridesmaids gone bad photo, and the result of their acting efforts is hilarious. After some photos with the girls, we headed to New London to St. Mary Star of the Sea church. Cassie and Evan exchanged vows in a beautiful church ceremony. Once they were officially husband and wife, their guests welcomed them out of the church with lots of bubbles. From there we were off to the Branford House for a beautiful reception.
The Branford House is always a gorgeous location to get married. It is right on the water in Groton, CT. The lawn of the mansion is perfect for photos. The Branford House has its own unique atmosphere that seems to tell a story all on its own. And there is never a shortage of locations for photos. In fact there is often too many options! Cassie and Evan were great subjects, and we soon learned the groomsmen could give the bridesmaids a run for their money. They added to the laughs and the antics behind the camera. This bridal party was definitely a fun bunch that continued with their enthusiasm throughout the night both on and off the dance floor. We hope you enjoy checking out some of the photos from the day.

Jake and I had met Leslie and Mike on two occasions, and we really enjoyed getting to know them both times. With each couple we meet, we always want to know their story. How did they meet? How did they get engaged? Leslie and Mike were both very sweet and nonchalant about their length of time together. However we learned at their wedding that their families were quite ready and waiting for this gorgeous couple to FINALLY get married! Although Mike and Leslie are young, they have quite a long history. I mean, they went to prom together long history! Yup, these two met in high school. Needless to say, this was a wedding that everyone was happy to attend and thankful that the day had finally arrived. And it couldn’t have been anymore beautiful a day for such a beautiful and deserving couple. Leslie and Mike had bright sun and clear skies for their beach ceremony. Anthony’s Ocean View
New Haven, CT

Kristy and Guy are such a sweet couple. It had been quite a while since their engagement shoot last fall, and we were looking forward to the wedding. We had a wonderful time with them, and we were excited to join in their day. Having gotten to know each of them a little, we expected the wedding to be a beautiful and fun day. However we actually underestimated just how fun the day turned out to be!
We met Kristy and the girls for photos at the Marriott in New Haven. After everyone was ready, excited, and eagerly anticipating the nuptials, per Kristy’s request, Jake got a photo of both bride and groom before the ceremony. They wanted to have the special moment of seeing each other for the first time as Kristy walked down the sand aisle. So they used the hotel door to keep the surprise.
When we arrived at the venue, guests were ready and waiting to catch a glimpse of this gorgeous bride and see these two married. As Kristy hid around the corner, guests were lined up with cameras and iPhones excited to snap a photo. Once she reached the alter with Guy, they began their ocean side ceremony. The backdrop of the sun and boats was beautiful and the weather was perfect. Anthony’s even supplied some palm trees on the beach to give it a bit of a destination wedding feel.
After some fun on the beach with the family, bridal party, and happy couple, it was time to get the party started. And what a party it was. We have to commend friends and family on their enthusiasm and energy from start to finish. The dance floor was never empty and the laughter continued you all night. Everyone did a wonderful job of helping Guy and Kristy celebrate this momentous occasion. They helped make it an even more memorable day than it was already. We want to thank everyone for making our job fun and easy. Enjoy the photos!

Jake and I have been to the Riverview many times, and it is always a beautiful venue. However, Scott and Michelle went above and beyond transforming the Riverview from a just vision to a perfect celebration. They gave new meaning to the phrase, “bringing it to life.” Before I get to that part, let me rewind and start at the beginning.
We met Michelle and the girls at the Simsbury Inn for photos. It is always a nice place for bridal photos. We had a blast with the girls who were excited for their camera shots, and they brought fun to every photo. And I must mention that Michelle is absolutely gorgeous. I am not sure she could take a bad photo. After everyone was dressed and ready, Michelle and Scott opted for a first look. While we respect each couple’s individual decision on when to see each other, we love the idea of a first look. They had a private moment to talk with each other and share their excitement and anticipation of the day. Not to mention it provided us with plenty of time to get some beautiful photos.

Sarah and Andy–The “Day” of Our Lives

Sarah and Andy
June 8, 2013
Wychwood Turkey Farm
North Stonington, CT

Sarah and Andy had such a beautiful and fun wedding. The location was amazing. It is always nice to photograph a wedding at a venue that is so personal to the couple. Sarah and Andy were married on the grass airplane runway of Wychwood Farm. The farm is a turkey farm in North Stonington (keep that in mind when Thanksgiving comes around), which has been in Andy’s Stepdad’s family for generations. Not only were the grounds for the wedding fantastic but so was the turkey they served at the reception! Guests sat in the actual airplane hangar and under a tent in an open green field, toasted and laughed with this happy couple, and helped them dance the night away. Sarah is by far the most animated bride we have encountered. She gave us and everyone else plenty of laughs and fun throughout the day. Their family and friends were warm and welcoming and a pleasure to spend the day with. Sarah and Andy spent plenty of time putting thought into the many vintage and rustic details of the day. It has been some of my favorite decor we have seen. Sarah’s father grew most of the flowers and did all of the amazing arrangements and bouquets himself. The guests were served dinner on a variety of china, and the centerpieces consisted of different floral arrangements in eclectic glass and china vases. But while all of that was wonderful none of it held a candle to the hilarious wedding vows that this couple shared. They were personal, loving, and funny just like the two people reciting them. Jake and I couldn’t have been more excited and thrilled to have been a part of this wedding celebration. Sarah and Andy thank you for making us a part of your day. It was truly a wedding to remember!
